Lithium is an essential material for the production of current and future generation lithium-ion (LiB) batteries. Today, about 20% of the lithium mined is already needed for the active components of the battery. Due to the rapid increase in demand, the supply of Li is expected to be insufficient to meet the market need from 2025 onwards.

The project focuses on the recovery of lithium from potential secondary sources, thus contributing to the reduction of the amount not recovered from waste.
RELIEF proposes a new approach to the recycling of lithium from secondary sources, which involves a continuous processing of the materials used in the battery production stage. Lithium waste will be reduced by more than 70%, and following the applied recycling processes, they will be transformed into materials of a higher quality, with high application potential in the production of batteries.

The results of integrated and continuous processes applied to used batteries will be demonstrated up to TRL 5 level. It is also aimed to obtain the active material, obtained from recycling processes, as well as the development of a new business model for the purchase and processing of materials, considering sustainable development and the social environment.

The expected results will contribute to reducing the European Union’s dependence on imports of chemicals and raw materials used in the next-generation battery industry. Also, the project will have a significant contribution to strengthening the competitiveness of the European Union in the value chain of battery storage.

The consortium is formed in an interdisciplinary way, connecting 12 partners from various fields: mining, mineralogical processing, metal recycling, chemical processing, battery material processing, sustainability and business modeling, of which 6 are SMEs, 4 non-profit research organizations and technology and 2 universities.
